The children have returned and have wasted little time in getting the country involved in another political staring match. Do not act surprised because we have seen this happen before and the only people who suffer are those associated with the middle class and small business. Both sides deserve equal blame and this political exercise is once again over the Continuing Resolution that was a result of no real action during the fiscal cliff and comparable events.
Breaking Down the Problem
Here’s the problem with the defunding of ObamaCare debate. The law is essentially a new entitlement program and shutting down the government will not derail anything. There will also probably not be any fundamental changes to the law as long as President Obama has veto power. He will exercise this power when needed and has threatened to do so on anything targeting unpopular provisions or proposing to repeal the healthcare reform law. Drinks on me if you think 2/3 of Congress will stand up to it. Instead, they should focus on doing their job and pass a budget so the people know the truth about how much their government really spends.
Here is why this is a important. The Budget Resolution prevents wasteful spending and when it is ignored there is not accountability on how your taxes are spent.
Remember, the main role of Congress is to spend our tax dollars and when they do not have a reasonable dialogue about how to spend our money we get into problematic situations like this one. The result is it causes the economy to suffer and uncertainty to cause business to hold back hiring. Meanwhile, inside the beltway we are empowering the executive branch because every time Congress does not do its job we lose money through the cracks. The culprit is these continuing resolutions because they destroy accountability.
Exhibit A why this is a problem. The healthcare reform law includes nearly 1,700 declarations of authority given to them by the Affordable Care Act. They are setting a dangerous precedent by governing on auto-pilot on both the spending and legislating sides. Plus they are giving power and authority to people we cannot vote out if we disagree.
A Futile Exercise?
There will not be any real changes to the healthcare reform law with President Obama still in office. And if and when there is any true pain he will be sailing out of office. So if you voted for change you are about to get it very soon because the healthcare delivery system is going to see sweeping reform.
