E.D. Bellis CEO on Bending the Healthcare Cost Curve
Sean McGuire, CEO of E.D. Bellis, a healthcare management consultancy specializing in the Affordable Care Act was quoted in the Omaha World Herald in response a report released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) indicating healthcare spending would not grow as rapidly as originally predicted when the law was passed.
In the article, McGuire remained wary of those numbers. “Slowing health care expenditures is good. But 5 and 6 percent increases still aren’t great, he said. “It’s OK news, but it’s nothing to really spike the football over, in my opinion,”
McGuire and others said another factor in slowing the spending rate is that many Americans are paying higher insurance deductibles than before. When some consider going to the doctor now, McGuire said, more of the cost will land on them in deductibles and copays. They might use doctors less because of this, he said.
McGuire also said the Affordable Care Act hasn’t insured as many as it was hoped to at this point. Although estimates of insured Americans vary widely, it’s certain that fewer are covered than expected under the law’s Medicaid expansion. This is because the Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that the federal government couldn’t force states to expand their Medicaid programs. And 19 states, including Nebraska, have declined to do so.”
Healthcare spending in the United States is nearly double other industrialized nations and contribute to nearly 20 percent of the overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Experts warn these numbers could present long-term budgetary concerns for America as the national debt is nearly $19 Trillion.
Since the adoption of the Affordable Care Act, E.D. Bellis, has emerged as the “go-to” source nationwide on execution and implementation of the ACA compliance strategies for small and mid-sized businesses. They also have solutions for large self-funded companies grappling with rising healthcare costs.
