What You Need For Open Enrollment

We made it to ObamaCare open enrollment despite a government shutdown.  If you are looking for what your coverage options will be in 2014 then check out www.healthcare.gov or continue reading because we were fortunate to have a national expert who was kind enough to contribute a column on this subject.  Katherine Woodfield is America’s first health insurance consumer advocate with impressive knowledge on how insurance works and how to lower costs.

Walking In Memphis

Last week, I had the opportunity to speak at the Westin Hotel on Beale Street in Memphis, TN to over 50 business owners from across the country specializing in custom doors and hardware, glass.  They are the “average” American businesses being challenged by the law.  This is not because they are not playing by the rules because many of them are offering quite generous plans.  Traveling all over the country to speak to companies and their employees has caused me to understand their frustration.

Ride to California

I feel like a gypsy the past couple of weeks but it has been a wonderful experience getting to visit with people all over the country. What is most interesting is that they are all talking about one thing in common.  Everybody has a story and they all have their own opinion about healthcare reform.

October Wonk Reviews

You can save about a days worth of research by checking out the wonk review carnival.  It is the who’s who of healthcare bloggers who are in the weeds researching healthcare reform.  This week’s issue is an entertaining read and hosted by Jaan Sidorov of the Disease Management blog which is a fantastic resource.

Assessing the Fall of 2013

We have been fortunate to have a pretty mild fall here in the heartland, however, our friends in Washington, DC are operating in a frosty environment.  Nothing seems to be working correctly and one guest nailed it when he referred to it as “hyper-partisan.” We will have to move beyond politics and have an adult conversation about what is really happening before anything can be fixed.

Break Down

A huge story broke last night and this time it could mean trouble for the Obama Administration, but could end up being good because people are now starting to understand the problem.  NBC news is reporting that the White House knew that the 14 million Americans who obtain their insurance through the individual market cannot keep their insurance.  According to a little known regulation, a substantial portion would not meet the grandfathered status.

Top Ten For October

With all of the distractions out there sometimes it is just easier to have what you need packaged for  you.  Special thanks to America’s Healthcare Challenge contributor, John Rathouz, aka John the Caddie for disseminating the following articles.  The story of the month has been the exchange roll out.  It is still early, but numerous questions remain.

In Too Deep

Moving beyond the debacle of October, we are going to begin focusing on solving the problem.  Like I have said multiple times, E.D. Bellis is over the politics associated with healthcare because this should be an individual issue since we will all be affected differently.  As a nation we need to focus on curbing healthcare costs.

Tracking the Hat

By John Rathouz aka John the Caddie
Co-host of America’s Healthcare Challenge

What’s one way to begin to explain healthcare reform and hint at the challenges facing America?  Wear a HealthReformExplained.com hat, that’s what I do.  For over five months now, I’ve been donning the white flat-bill emblazoned with a red and blue logo.  The hat was a gift to me from Sean McGuire, the leader of this just cause, originally made to be worn during the US Open golf tournament in Philadelphia this past June.
