Last week, I had the opportunity to speak at the Westin Hotel on Beale Street in Memphis, TN to over 50 business owners from across the country specializing in custom doors and hardware, glass. They are the “average” American businesses being challenged by the law. This is not because they are not playing by the rules because many of them are offering quite generous plans. Traveling all over the country to speak to companies and their employees has caused me to understand their frustration.Details

The children have returned and have wasted little time in getting the country involved in another political staring match. Do not act surprised because we have seen this happen before and the only people who suffer are those associated with the middle class and small business. Both sides deserve equal blame and this political exercise is once again over the Continuing Resolution that was a result of no real action during the fiscal cliff and comparable events.Details
Businesses struggling to navigate the Obama healthcare law can breathe a sigh of relief. October 1st is an important date for Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) implementation because it is when the new health insurance marketplaces will begin open enrollment. There is also a soft compliance deadline causing confusion in the business community because many fear they will be penalized for non-compliance.

Molly Hatchet fans pay attention. The IT testing for the new health insurance marketplaces is two months behind schedule and we are within two months of open enrollment. One side is exploring taking the financing out of the law while the other plans to campaign on the issue in 2014. Nobody is talking about the fact that the feds have been working on this thing for three years and millions of consumers are expecting a benefit soon. Still there remains no bi-partisan effort to fix anything. Is this thing flirting with disaster?Details
As we approach football season prepare yourself for a big showdown in the fall. The Obama Administration and their allies huddled to come up with the best approach for enrolling 2.7 million people into the new insurance marketplaces beginning October 1st. Republicans continue their ardent opposition by voting for the 40th time to repeal ObamaCare and to delay other parts of the law including this new data hub they contend will be like a giant router. I wonder how many times it will have to be reset like mine.Details
The two officials in charge of implementing the most important parts of the Affordable Care Act appeared on Capitol Hill today for a hearing in front of the House Ways and Means Committee. Republicans called it “oversight” while one Democrat referred to it as an “inquisition.” The House is clearly partisan but there was important information covered. Congress will be taking five weeks off to go back to their constituents and leaving only 12 real legislative days before open enrollment begins. Will they be in for another round of “town hell” meetings like in 2009?Details

The only thing hotter this week than the weather is a printing press at a federal office building. The White House is stepping up its efforts to promote the law and states are coming up with creative advertising strategies to enroll people in the new exchanges this fall. Meanwhile, a mini regulation dam burst July, 2013 with several pages of critical regulations being released since the White House quietly announced the one year delay of the employer mandate over the 4th of July recess.Details
